SAMSUNG 990 PRO PCIe 4.0
- Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s
- Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s
- 50% improved performance per Watt over 980 PRO
990 PRO NVMe SSD
The 990 PRO is a PCIe 4.0 ×4 NVMe SSD — meaning it uses the high-speed PCIe 4.0 interface for data transfer. Compared with older PCIe 3.0 or SATA drives, Roughly doubles the per-lane data rate, delivering much faster read/write speeds. For sequential operations, this drive provides up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write.

In real-world testing (gaming, workstation workloads, random 4K reads/writes), it continues to “excel,” especially in random I/O (Q32T16) workloads — which matter for OS responsiveness, app load times, and heavy data tasks.
SAMSUNG 990 PRO because it uses NVMe over PCIe (rather than SATA), you get big improvements over traditional SSDs/HDDs for boot times, application launches, game loads, video editing, and general system snappiness.
That said SSDs come with trade-offs: they tend to produce more heat, may require better cooling/heatsinks, and the real-world performance gains over a top SSD like aren’t always dramatic (especially for everyday tasks/gaming).
Still buy 990 PRO in 2025
- Gamers — quick game load times, fast asset streaming, minimal stutter with large open-world or modded games.
- General users / everyday PC users — OS boot, app launches, multitasking, and productivity tools will run noticeably smoother than on SATA or older SSDs.
- Content creators/video editors: fast, random, and sequential I/O make editing, rendering, and exporting large files comfortable.
- Mid-range to high-end PC builders who want a proven, balanced SSD without paying a premium for Gen5.
